Uncombed cotton on China retaliatory duties list China has set out its retaliatory duties on US products China has hit back at the tariffs announced by the US Administration by imposing additional retaliatory duties on US$50bn worth of US products – including uncombed cotton – as the trade war between the two nations intensifies. The Trump administration released a list of products imported from China on Friday (15 June) that will be hit with an additional 25% tariff – but to the relief of US industry removed most of the equipment and machinery used in domestic textile, apparel, and footwear manufacturing that had been originally proposed. The tariffs on $50bn of Chinese imports were first outlined in April following a Section 301 investigation into unfair Chinese technology and intellectual property policies and practices. China's Ministry of Commerce responded the following day (16 June) by outlining retaliatory tariffs of 25% on $34bn worth of imports, including agriculture products and automobiles, to be effective from 6 July 2018. Combed cotton appears to be the only textile product on the list. Additional tariffs of 25% will also be levied on $16bn of commodities imported from the US, including chemicals, medical equipment, and energy products, at a date to be determined. "The United States disregards China's resolute opposition and solemn representations and insists on taking actions that violate the rules of the World Trade Organization," China's Ministry of Commerce said in a statement at the weekend. "It seriously violates China's legitimate rights and interests under the rules of the World Trade Organization and threatens China's economic interests and security. " The decision has been made in line with relevant stipulations of the Foreign Trade Law of China and the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Import and Export Duties, as well as the fundamental principles of international laws, the statement said.
